WHAT WE ARE ABOUT

Scouting is a CCUM ministry to the youth of our community. We serve approximately 200 girls, boys, young men and young women from the ages of 5 (girls) or 7 (boys) to 21. We have a Boy Scout Troop and eight Girl Scout Troops for the middle years, and a Cub Scout Pack and a Brownie Troop for the younger years, and a co-ed high ad-Venture Crew for older teenagers.

Scouting has been an active part of CCUM's community ministry for twenty years. Less than half of the youth in our scouting programs are members of CCUM. We have scouts and leaders from many religious denominations and many youth who have no church affiliation. YOUR CHILDREN are welcome. We have a place for any young person in our community.

Starting with the basic skills, we encourage advancement in all our units. Our scouts continuously earn more Gold awards for the girls and more Eagle ranks for the boys than the national averages. We actively encourage, but do not require, scouts to participate in the "God and...." series of scouting religious awards that are available for most religious denominations at each age level.

ADULT LEADERSHIP & TRAINING

We also encourage very active participation by parents and related adults in our scouting programs. We have more than 75 adults serving our scouting programs in different roles. We also have and follow a Youth Protection Program for scouting as well as all of our church youth programs.

One of the strengths of our scouting programs has been, is, and will continue to be the active training of adult leaders of all our scouting units. Most of our leaders have participated in some form of scout leader training.

We have established the Sherry Millard Memorial Scout Leader Training Fund as part of our commitment to encourage and support the training programs of our scout leaders.

GOALS

Our goals for the scouting program at CCUM are very direct:

1. Scouting programs should be FUN. Youth learn when they are having fun and are enthusiastic about the activities that are doing.

2. Scouting programs should be of SERVICE to God, family, community and other people.

3. Scouting programs should provide each scout individual GROWTH opportunities to realize their full potential in life: physically, mentally and morally.

INDIVIDUAL UNITS

The activities of each of the units to achieve our goals are best explained by the units.

Vist our Boy Scout Troop 5 website, our Cub Scout Pack 5 website and our Venture Crew 5 website.

If you want more information about the activites, or about having your youth join the individual units, or about serving as a scouting leader, please contact Bill Gardner, CCUM Scouting Coordinator, at (205) 257-4082 (Office) or 991-5116 (Home) or email at wsgardnereng@aol.com.

We are always looking for new youth, new leaders, and new ideas to better serve the youth in our community.

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE AS AN ADULT

If any of the following are of interest to you, please call or email the scouting coordinator listed above.

Our unit committees and unit leaders are always looking for new volunteers. If you already have a youth participating in one of our programs, we have a place for you as committee person, as a scout leader, or in some other leadership role that meets your needs. We have a number of annual projects such as the Christmas Scouting for Food program where we can use volunteers even for a few hours. We are particularly looking for some new faces for the Troop 5 Boy Scout committee.

The Boy Scouts and Venture Units are always looking for Merit Badge Counselors. The merit badge program provides opportunities for youth to explore more than a hundred fields of skill and knowledge. Many adults already have the life or career skills to be a Merit Badge Counselor in one field or another.

For a current list of he Merit Badges offered, please scoll to the bottom of THIS LINK PAGE. If you think you have the life or career skills that qualify you in any of these areas, and want to get the satisfaction of working with a youth to further their learning, we can use your talents now. Even if your children are younger or older than scouting age, your time and/or talents are valuable to us.

SCOUT SUNDAY

The twelfth scout law for the Boy Scouts is "A Scout is Reverent."

Scout Sunday is celebrated in February. Scouts and leaders from all of our units takw part in the different parts of the 10:45 am service at Christ Church.

Cross and Flame awards are presented and "God and ...." awards are presented to many scouts at all levels.

Thanks to all CCUM members and visitors who attend this service. Scouting is one cornerstone of the CCUM Outreach Ministry.

OTHER YOUTH OUTREACH MINISTRY PROGRAMS

The United Methodist Church also officially recognizes Campfire and 4-H as outreach youth ministry programs. We do not offer these at CCUM at this time. However, we extend the same offer to anyone wanting to start and lead a Campfire or 4-H unit. We will help you with support, facility, and whatever else we can to insure your success.
